More signs of Spring in Maine!

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the climate in Maine transitions from season to season. Scarsely has the snow melted in our front yard, well, actually we still HAD a bit of snow, when the crocuses first appeared (see Spring Comes to Maine). Now the snow is gone and more flowers are in bloom. Our daffodils are looking more lovely than ever before and have really brightened up not only our yard, but the yards of my neigbours as well (many thanks to Claudette and her son for not only letting me poke around in their garden but also sent me home with the lovely daffodils in the last two daffodil photos on this blog).

Other flowers I’ve seen in bloom are the now identified as “snow drops” (fourth photo of blue flowers against brick base of house). The neighbour who allowed me to photograph these informed me of what they were, though I had not seen these before, they certainly are bright and cheerful. I was very surprised to see hyacinth already as I thought they come out a bit later in spring, around the time of the tulips, but low and behold, I’ve seen hyacinth as well.

The rest of my garden is also starting to come back to life. Perennials are starting to bud and green. In the next week I expect to see tulips opening as well.

In Maine, we have about six months of winter, so when spring comes, it is such a joy to behold! Viva spring! For those who can’t wait for full-on summer, check out my flower gallery at http://www.angelacoulombe.com/flowers.php.

Easter Sunday

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Easter Sunday in Maine went off without a hitch. The weather, though cool and breezy, was at least sunny and dry! We’d been experiencing lots of rain and fog recently, and of course, it has also been known to snow in April, so we lucked out with a sunny day!

We had three generations of family participate in an Easter egg hunt, which consisted of children and adults running around a couple arces of land trying to find plastic coloured eggs which contained candies and money! Some of the eggs were in obvious places (purple egg below lying at the base of a mossy tree stump) while others were well concealed under bushes, where you really had to get down onto the ground to root out.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Easter without Easter lillies, hot cross buns, and a more recent addition to our festivities, peeps. Yeah, we’ve succumbed to whatever it is that makes people buy these sugar-incased-in-sugar concoctions.

One of the presents brought to the hosue was this gerber daisy which was quite fascinating. It had four flower heads all growing from the same stem. This is the first time I’ve seen this, but no one else seemed to find it unusual. Hmm.

All in all, it was a great day for getting together with family, sharing stories, taking photos and of course, microwaving peeps.

Spring comes to Maine!

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Hooray for Spring and a Return to Plants and Color!

For the past two weeks I have been pretty much house-bound with a sick child who needed quite a lot of supervision. The past weeks were as grey and foggy as the day I shot the Wednesday Weather fog shots. In fact, in the nine years I’ve been living in Maine, I cannot remember such grizzly, foggy and dismal weather! (No wonder my poor child was ill!)

However, this all seemed to change this weekend. With some warmer temperatures outside (Saturday, April 4th, we actually got up to 55F -  what a scorcer!), and some sunshine, spring seems to finally be kicking into gear. Miraculously enough, the crocuses are all in bloom around my yard, especially where I carefully transplanted quite a few blubs last year after having to replant a tree in the spot where we lost one earlier in the year! As a person who’s passion it is to photograph flowers, I was estatic beyond words this weekend. My child is over his illness, and I was able to take a few photos of the first flowers of spring:

The daffodils and tulips should be following shortly, though, of course, April showers bring May flowers and there is plenty of rain scheduled for the next couple of days!
