Feelin’ Summer Bliss

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

After a long winter in Maine, which can begin anytime from October onward and possibly extending through to the following April, the first few sunny, warm days at the turn of the season bring a certain nostalgia for summer days of old, where life was just one big beach, music filled the air (or maybe that was just my walkman) and livin’ was easy. Well, as a Spanish friend once said to me, “Nunca es lo mismo siempre”,  or roughly translated, “Nothing is the same always.” And though that may be true, I had a brief glimpse back to my own youth watching my son experience the  joy that the first truly warm day after the long thaw out brings. Whilst riding in the car on what can only be described as a truly glorious day about two weeks ago, my youngest son rolled down the window, let the wind blow back his hair and being of an age where inhibition doesn’t exist, began to sing a song with all the heart felt emotion that such a day inspires! Capturing his image was like capturing that perfect moment of bliss, so untainted and pure. By visiting this image, I too feel a certain sense of pure summer bliss,  a true gift indeed to experience.

Int’l Boston Seafood Show

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Returning back to the Boston Seafood Show in 2010 presented a slightly different vibe from the 2009 show. I was pleasantly surprised when I was recognized and cordially greeted by several exhibitors that I had photographed the year before. It seems that bond between willing participant and photographer made a lasting impression and I was pleased to be able to re-establish this relationship. As always, I enjoy the challenge of photographing the International Boston Seafood Show with it’s mixture of activity, equipment, product and people on the show floor. Conveying the magnitude of the event is never easy; from the crowds to the special events and this year seeing the use of social media (tweets, facebook, etc), presented some interesting opportunities to use photography in an ever evolving way. Below is a small selection of images the show a varied approach to documenting the show. Luncheon in support of the Maine MS Society, March 10, 2010

When I was asked to create images from the Women on the Move Luncheon held in Portland on March 10, 2010, I jumped at the chance to provide this service to such a worhty cause. Throughout the years, I’ve personally known too many people who have lived with this chronic and disabling disease. Just be being in the presence of so many well versed members of the MS society, I learned much more about this disease. Kim Block, from WGME-13 mceed the event and speakers included Dr. Ann Cabot, D.O. and Joyce Nelson, President and CEO of the National MS Society. Awards were given out to the family of Mr Barrows who started the Maine chapter of the society and to Pam Littell, who with no large corporate donations behind her, has single-handedly raised over $150,000 for research into this disease. Listening to her story, I fought back tears, (not good when you’re taking pictures to have your eyes misted over) and left feeling more humbled. For more information about the society and this event, check out http://www.msmaine.org.
